EFO a winner again in the Africa Rural Connect Competition

Energy For Opportunity was recently announced as a winner in the 4th and final round of the 2010 Africa Rural Connect competition, run by the National Peace Corp Association, in the process being awarded US1,000.

This is the second time that EFO has been a winner in the Africa Rural Connect competition, also being a prize winner in the 1st round of the competition in 2009. We are now in the running to win a further US$12,000; the overall annual prize.

EFO presents its education research at African Studies conference in Melbourne

On the 3rd of December 2010, Energy For Opportunity presented its recent research on the impacts of Solar and ICT intervention on rural education in Sierra Leone at the African Studies Association of Australasia and the Pacific (AFSAAP) Conference at Victoria University in Melbourne. Koinadugu District Planning Trip

EFO staff spent last week on the back of Motorcycles in North Eastern Sierra Leone collecting information to inform the 3 year program plan for Koinadugu district. Aside from identifying a number of chiefdom headquarters town who will be perfect for Community charging stations, the team also identified Secondary schools and Community Health Centres that would benefit from solar installations. The three year plan is in the final stages of completion and our legs have finally recovered from 3 days on motorbikes.

Kailahun Government Hospital

Energy For Opportunity is heading to Kailahun today to start work on one of our most exciting projects to date. The Government of Sierra Leone has decided to implement solar electricity at four pilot sites across the country with the long term plan to install solar electricity at all 21 government run Hospitals. EFO will be leading the installation teams at two of the sites, Kailahun and Rokupa (Freetown). Kamakwie SSS - Computer Lab

EFO recently returned to Kamakwie Senior Secondary School where Students and staff participated in two weeks of computer classes with EFO volunteer Dan Peade in the Computer Lab EFO helped establish earlier this year. The basic computer course was a follow up to teaching previously undertaken by EFO Princeton Intern Nizette Edwards. The course aimed at providing both teachers and senior secondary students with both basic computer skills and the means by which to teach these skills to others.
