FLEGT - Complete!

After nearly eight months of intensive field research and another six months of analysis, some more analysis and a bunch of report writing the EFO FLEGT project, 'Preventing Deforestation: Understanding Timber and Fuelwood Markets in Sierra Leone' has been completed. The final report is attached and provides insight into the various commodity markets and their impacts on forest cover in Sierra Leone. The data, results and recommendations can provide invaluable information for future policy in the country and it has been rewarding making this contribution to the process.

WASH Project

Energy For Opportunity is expanding its community charging station programme with the addition of solar powered water purification facilities at nine sites across Kambia, Koinadugu and Bombali Districts. Building on the successful model that has brought charging and energy services to over 25 communities across the country we will now start local water purification, getting clean, safe drinking water to places that existing distribution networks either can't or don't reach.

Community Health Centres and Posts

During what will be one of our most hectic periods, Energy For Opportunity will complete a total of 17 installations at Health Centres and Health Posts across Bonthe, Kenema and Tonkolili Districts. The project is being funded by the African Development Bank and EFO has been approached to support the main contractors installing the solar and electrical systems at the sites. This is a significant project for the country and the health sector and will improve quality and access of care available to the communities involved.

Solar Energy For Madina Community Health Post

EFO recently launched a new project through the Global Giving site which will upgrade the existing vaccine fridge unit and install a basic solar lighting and power system at the Community Health Post in Madina, Kambia District. We have already received an initial $2000 grant from the Bridge St United Church Foundation and are hoping to build on that funding and maximise the impact of the installation.

This builds on the very successful work in Koinadugu, which saw the establishment of a full distribution network for solar lighting products in the District, including four community charging stations (two more to be added) and five individual entrepreneurs.

The program expansion will see eighteen charging stations established across the three target Districts. In Kambia the sites will serve as a base for EFO's developing program, while ...
